Editorial Review: This valuable guide takes organic chemists through the basic techniques of the organic chemistry lab such as interpretation of infrared spectroscopy. The eighth edition has been revised to include updated coverage of NMR Spectroscopy and UV spectroscopy. New questions at the end of chapters reinforce the skills and techniques learned. Emphasis is placed on green chemistry in the lab, focusing on the more environmentally friendly materials that can be used. In addition, updated discussions are included on safety, distillation, gas chromatography, and liquid chromatography. This gives organic chemists the most up-to-date information to enhance their lab skills.
Infuriatingly patronizing 3 out of 5
In terms of information, this book deserves four or five stars, but the author's tone and style are abysmal. Instead of gearing his writing towards a general audience, he assumes the reader is a bumbling, brain-dead premed who will do anything for that A in organic lab. If you have a reasonably good TA/lab prof., there really isn't a need for this book. Otherwise, it is good to have around, since it does present information appropriate for a typical one semester intro lab course. For more advanced organic lab courses, as well as research, I would recommend Advanced Practical Organic Chemistry by Leonard, Lygo, and Procter.

I am working in research 3 years now and i still find this book useful for remembering stuff and quick finding of procedures which i don't practice very often. Highly recommended for every chemist.
