Written by a medical doctor and a certified nutritional consultant (James F. Balch, M.D., and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C.), this revised and expanded edition of Prescription for Nutritional Healing is one of the most complete, up-to-date guides to nutritional, herbal, and complementary therapies available. Prescription for Nutritional Healing starts with the premise: "Good nutrition is the foundation of good health." In the 600 pages that follow, the authors expand on this concept, explaining how to heal the body, achieve optimum health, strengthen the immune system, and increase energy levels using vitamins, minerals, herbs, and dietary food supplements. The book contains three sections. "Understanding the Elements of Health" provides a thorough introduction to nutrition, diet, and wellness; offers guidelines for selecting and preparing food; and discusses hot topics such as aspartame (Is it safe?) and phytochemicals. "The Disorders" gives an A-Z reference to handling more than 300...

Customer Rating: Summary: Mom of eight!! Comment: I have used that Priscription for Nutritional Healing for several years now and it has saved me many trips to the Doctor by showing me how to take care of my self and my family.
I am mother of 8 children--and 10 grandchildren and so this year I ordered this book for them for Christmas. I wanted them to have a good reference book of their own as they raise their families!!!
I call this book My health bible!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Book! Comment: Absolutely Great Book for anyone! Even if you never buy an herb, this is a great book to have on hand to reference in the middle of the night when you're wondering about some problem you or a loved one are experiencing. It gives great recommendations of diet, herbs, vitamins, what not to do or eat, etc. It helps you help yourself be more healthy & conscious of what will benefit you naturally...not saying "don't go to your MD"... just "take responsibility for your own health & here is a guidebook."
Customer Rating: Summary: Prescription for Nutritional Healing - 4th Edition Comment: This is a very large book with great information. I like how it is laid out and for each issue (in Part Two of the book) the author separates some supplements you may want to take into groups in order of their importance/effectiveness. There is also a lot of information in the first part of the book.
Because this is such a comprehensive book, I don't think the author is able to be a specialist in each of the areas discussed, which can cause a problem. In specific, I was looking at the lupus section and the author recommends taking alfalfa herbs. Alfalfa is a big no-no for lupus patients in all forms (this is addressed in a wonderful book written specifically about lupus called "The Lupus Book - 4th Edition by Daniel Wallace). Under "recommendations", the author does recommend avoid eating alfalfa sprouts, but still recommends it as an herb. Any form of alfalfa is potentially harmful and may cause serious flares in a lupus patient. This is just an example of how the author can give some misleading advice.
So, although it is a great overall resource, I would highly recommend researching any specific problems/diseases you may be dealing with in addition to using the information in this book - just to be sure that you are getting the specialized information that the author may not be able to provide.
Customer Rating: Summary: A WEALTH OF INFORMATION FOR ALTERNATIVE HEALING Comment: This is a very thick book with tons of information. I am really enjoying reading it and finding alternative healing to my family's health issues, from breast cancer to autism to allergies.
Customer Rating: Summary: Comprehensive Comment: With over five million copies sold, this book is one of the most read texts on nutritional health. I say "text" because it measures in at a good inch and three-quarters thick. Written by a certified nutritionist and a bona-fide MD, it is neatly divided up into three parts.
Part I, a quarter-inch thick discusses the basic principles of health and nutrition. This section lists and explains the various kinds of nutrients and food supplements.
Part II, by far the biggest section of the book measuring in at an inch and a quarter, provides the reader with an A-Z listing of many common disorders (such as backache or diabetes) and what you can do about them from a nutritional point of view.
The book ends with Part III, the last quarter-inch of the book, which is devoted to traditional therapies and conventional treatments that can be used along with a nutritional support. Here you'll find info on treatments such as chiropractic, massage therapy, color therapy, and so on.
I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the amount of info contained in this book and I can definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good nutritional reference book to put on their shelf when questions arise. Additionally, is also might give readers ideas of other types of therapies they could try for various medical problems. Other health titles I can recommend also include The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution for people who have trouble with chronic plantar fasciitis.
