Summary: I'm ready to send it to recycling: it's an ink hog
Comment: I can't put up with this machine any more. If one cartridge is low on ink, or at least the sensor says so, then the machine quits functioning. No black & white printing unless you run out to a store and buy the ink cartridge the machine says is out of ink, when really, there seems to be enough ink left in that cartridge to shake out into a trash basket and it looks like there's a ton of ink left in the so-called "empty" cartridge. Plenty of ink there, but apparently not enough for the low ink sensors. So Canon apparently wants to make its money on selling ink. One other thing about this machine: The instruction manual is not very helpful when things don't go right. You'll wind up figuring out what is wrong through trial and error. I wish I had waited to read the Amazon reviews more carefully before I bought this MP830. I regret buying it.

Comment: Our MP830 failed after twenty months of very infrequent use. And we are not alone. Google error code 6A00, and you will see how our machine failed like apparently thousands of others. Apparently Canon's ink innovation of separating the ink jets from the ink storage containers was a miserable failure.

Summary: Horrible printer - BAD customer service
Comment: I've had this printer for a little over a year. While it has worked at times, other reviewers are correct that it is an ink hog and it also has many technical issues.
My printer has had two bad print heads. I replaced the first one, then one day I turned on the printer and it says that "the print head is incorrect." If you are out of the warranty period the response from Canon "customer service" is to buy another print head. Basically, just keeping dumping more money into the faulty product.
Also, if the print head if faulty, other non-printing functions (like scanning and faxing) will not work.
Based on this product and rude customer service, I'll be staying away from Canon.

Summary: Terrible quality
Comment: My husband and I have been using this printer for about a year now, and at least twice a week we say, this is the worst printer we've ever owned. The paper often goes through the printer at an angle, no matter what one does to keep it straight. This means that pictures and letters often print crooked on the page. In addition, the paper often crunches through the printing process creating an edge that is bent, scraped and deformed. If a person has normal sized arms, he/she can't reach the feed tray without getting up from the chair. Since the feed tray doesn't hold much paper, this leads to lots of unexpected exercise. Last, after a few months this printer started printing two normal lines of text and then two lines of light text all the way through every page. All the cleaning and changing of cartridges have not changed this flaw. We don't want to spend the money to get it fixed (if it's even possible) because we plan to replace this printer as soon as we possibly can. Maybe we just got a lemon. But I won't buy Canon again for awhile.

Comment: Too bad I had to give it 1-star.
I agree with the previous reviewer who suggests that you run (don't walk) away from this printer. I would extend that to suggest that you should carefully check out any Canon multi-function printer (MP printer series) for the following issues.
The Canon MP830 printer seems to be designed to guzzle color ink when printing in duplex (2-sided) grayscale (black & white) mode. In my opinion, this is a profit driven decision by Canon to extract as much money as possible from their customer's wallets. Apparently, many other Canon printers were designed with the same philosophy in mind.
Somehow this printer has consistently received good to excellent reviews. It is interesting that you rarely, if ever see these issues in printer reviews, even from presumably "consumer" driven magazines that specifically rate printers. These reviews are usually based on criteria like ink consumption, image quality, and cost per page - all of which suffer with this printer in greyscale duplex (2-sided black and white) mode. Hmmm....
Here is how I got there:
- Canon is apparently aware of the ink guzzling issue, and refuses to fix it. In fact, others claim it is intentionally designed this way (I believe that's true). In the software world, we have a joke for this: It's not a bug, it's a feature!
- one of the main reasons that consumers will be attracted to this printer is because of the duplex printing capabilities.
- users often turn-off color printing and print in greyscale to save money, unless they want color printing for a specific document.
- Apparently, the claim from Canon is that black ink will "bleed through" so their MP830 design forces the printer to use color ink when printing in greyscale duplex mode. This does not happen (as much) in single sided grayscale mode, which seems to use mainly black ink and has much better print quality than two-sided grayscale mode.
- I have never seen bleed through in single-sided grayscale mode, even with very cheap paper.
- This mixture of color inks to create black, gives a vastly inferior print when compared to using black ink.
- Canon goes further by even preventing operation of the printer if ANY of the color cartridges run out, even though you are greyscale mode. Hmm... again.
- Canon (and other printer manufacturers) realize that much of their profit from an inkjet printer comes from future sales of ink, rather than the the cost of the printer itself.
Hence, the printer seems to be designed to gulp down as much expensive ink as possible, without regard for image quality. I believe that this is a cynical ploy to extract as much cash from the consumer as physically possible, without regard for quality.
